In 1912, a nineteen year old Herbert Watts opened the Eagle Restaurant in downtown Utica with the help of his mother, Mary Ellen.
In the mid 1930's, when Franklin Delano Roosevelt made the eagle the symbol for the National Recovery Act, Herb, not wanting anything to do with FDR, changed the restaurant's name to Watts Restaurant. After his death in 1953, his wife Samaria operated the restaurant until she died in 1972.
In 1972, Robert Watts, Herb's son, assumed ownership. He then started a significant expansion program. He purchased and renovated an attached house and barbershop to make two additional dining rooms and, he acquired an adjacent gas station and blacksmith shop and demolished them for a much needed parking lot.
In 2000, Steve, Herb Watts' grandson, became the present day third generation owner operator.

Watts Restaurant is a family style restaurant known for fresh baked ham and raisin sauce, slow roasted pork and beef, and fresh fried chicken served with mashed potatoes and homemade gravy and creamed vegetables. Also, we serve fish, homemade salmon patties, clams, and shrimp. Our homemade butterscotch, banana, and coconut cream pies have also been very popular.
In order to accommodate changing consumer tastes, we have supplemented this core menu with salads, homemade vegetable soup and chili, chicken tenders, various appetizers, country fried steak, chicken and ham salad croissants, and cheesecake and fruit pies. In addition, our sandwich menu has been expanded from our traditional pork, beef, and ham to grilled and fried chicken, a delicious gourmet burger, pulled pork topped with our homemade coleslaw, and all beef slaw dogs.
Our philosophy has always, and always will be, to serve our valued customers the highest quality food possible. We are proud of our last 100 years and pledge to continue serving you well into the future.
Aside from our dinners, we have daily specials and a variety of sandwiches, desserts and the famous Velvet vanilla ice cream.
